Special Category – 2027 Fifty years ago, a galaxy far, far away jumped to hyperspace and landed squarely in our imaginations. Since then, Star Wars has given us epic battles, unforgettable heroes and villains, enough lightsabers to start a small electrical utility, and the enduring mystery of how stormtroopers managed to miss so many targets at such close range.
Half a century later, the Force remains strong, inspiring generations of fans, builders, dreamers, and people who still make spaceship noises when nobody is looking.
To celebrate this incredible milestone, WASMEx is opening the docking bay doors to our Star Wars 50th Anniversary Special Category
Starfighters, capital ships, walkers, droids, creatures, vehicles, characters, planets, scenes, cantinas, moisture evaporators, abandoned Jedi temples—or even that one background alien whose name requires three apostrophes—all are eligible.
Whether you build for the Empire, the Rebellion, the Republic, the Separatists, the Resistance, the First Order, or simply follow the credits, this is your chance to showcase your modelling skills and your love for a saga that has entertained the galaxy for five decades.
So, dust off your workbench, engage your targeting computer, and remember unlike a certain farm boy from Tatooine, you'll need a little more than the Force to finish your model on time.
The rules are simple: if it belongs in the Star Wars universe, it is welcome here. This is a special category, rather than a competition restricted to a particular manufacturer, scale, era or modelling technique. The emphasis is on celebrating the creativity, craftsmanship and imagination of Star Wars modelling. Commercial kits, heavily modified kits and completely original creations are equally welcome.
All finishing styles are encouraged. Lighting, fibre optics, electronics, sound and mechanical features are encouraged where safely installed and suitable for public exhibition.
THE SPIRIT OF THE THEME Star Wars has inspired generations of artists, model builders and makers over the past fifty years. This anniversary celebrates not only the films and television series, but also the enormous creativity and imagination they have inspired.
Whether recreating an iconic cinematic moment, designing an entirely new starship, building an immersive diorama, bringing a favourite character to life, or showcasing cutting-edge 3D printing and fabrication techniques, entrants are encouraged to create something that captures the adventure, wonder and creativity of a galaxy far, far away.
There is no single "correct" way to build a Star Wars model. Build it from a kit. Scratch-build it. 3D print it. Modify it. Light it. Animate it. Weather it until it looks like it's been through three galactic wars—or make it look like it just rolled off the production line.
If it captures the spirit of Star Wars and demonstrates your modelling skills and imagination, it belongs in this Special Category.
Previously completed or exhibited models are NOT ELIGIBLE
May the Force be with you, and happy building!
