What is plastic scale modelling all about?
O.K., somehow you have found yourself here without
really knowing too much about the topic. Plastic scale modelling
is the creation of small representations of various full-sized
subjects and is usually accomplished by using a commercially produced
plastic kit-set as the basis of the scale model. These kits range
from the rather simple plastic models that can be found in some
toy stores through to expensive, very accurate and incredibly
intricate products that are produced in small numbers specifically
for the serious scale modeller.
What does the 'scale' part mean?
'Scale' indicates that there is a measurable and
consistent ratio between the size of the model as built and that
of the subject being represented. For example, one of the most
common model-to-subject ratios in which aircraft are modelled
is 1:72, or 1/72nd scale. This simply means that the finished
model will be exactly 72 times smaller than the real aircraft,
or conversely, if every part of the model was 72 times bigger
than it is then the model would be life size. Modelling in a consistent
scale is popular because when various models are displayed together
they are all of the same relative size as they would be 'in real
life'.
Aren't they just toys?
Well, no. They are actually fragile display pieces,
often accurately representing a subject of historical significance
and may be the result of many months worth of careful research
and/or construction. Then again, sometimes the subject is completely
whimsical and built just for fun.
So, what's on show at the Expo?
The intent of WASMEx is two fold: An annual gathering
of like-minded hobbyists and an opportunity for the general public
to enjoy a display of scale modelling excellence and perhaps be
introduced to the delights of this family-friendly pastime.
The exhibits are mostly static display pieces although
every year we host a few guest clubs with other modelling related
interests such as radio controlled trucks or boats or gaming.
Generally though, there are other events devoted those pursuits
and so WASMEx is the show to visit to appreciate the wonderful
art of scale modelling. Why not come along and experience it for
yourself? We hope to see you there.
